Abstract
The Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) model proposed by Baltes and Baltes(1990) explains that despite the loss from aging, the elderly may achieve successful aging based on compensation of the loss made as they select activities suitable to their capabilities and optimize their skills. Noticing the application of SOC model as a strategy to implement development tasks restructuring the elderly life for successful aging in various steps of aging, this paper aims to shed new light upon advantages uniquely held by SOC model differentiated from other successful aging approaches and explore effective interventions and strategy development potentials for successful aging appropriate to the elderly of diverse status by using the SOC model so that these advantages and strategies can be used in the area of elderly people¡¯s welfare and education sites. In order to achieve these aims, we reviewed usefulness of the model and presented strategies for the elderly welfare applicable to the elderly typified based on different value preferences, health conditions, and resource differences as well as practical intervention of education. This was aimed at contributing to application of SOC model as a practical approach because the model proved the possibility of strategies for successful aging despite differences in diverse circumstances faced by the elderly.
